A 26-year-old student-teacher has been detained for sexual misconduct with a high school student.
A secondary education student at the Mary Lou Fulton Teacher College and a math teacher at the Tempe High School, Joel Calderon was arrested early this morning from his home after his 16-year-old student revealed their amorous relationship.
During interrogation, Calderon reportedly confirmed his relationship with the student. He has been set free following the confession.
Police revealed that Calderon performed sex with the girl student on multiple occasions at his home. Calderon had apparently used social media to get to know the student.
The matter came to light when another student reported the alleged relationship to school officials, who in turn, called the police.
"For her to come forward was the right thing to do," said Sgt. Mike Pooley with Tempe Police.
"Although it might be hard, it's things like this that we look to students, we look to other peers of students to come forward to help in these types of situations."
The University will investigate into the allegations charged against Calderon. If proven guilty, he could face expulsion.
Calderon has been charged with six counts of sexual conduct with a minor, a Class 2 felony. Investigations are on and further charges are likely to be pressed on him.
