A Washington state lawmaker has stirred in a controversy after he he called the state of Arizona a "racist wasteland."
Democratic Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon 'tweeted' this 'racist' comment after the Seattle Seahawks lost to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday evening. He later deleted the message and clarified in an interview that people were taking his trash talk a little too seriously.
"If folks are going to take that too seriously, then I'm sorry about that," Fitzgibbon said.
However, Fitzgibbon, continuing his rant said that Washington "has not appreciated" how Arizona has treated its immigrants, referring to the 2010 immigration law that was legally challenged by the federal government. He said Arizona leaders need to change laws at it could amount to racial profiling.
The Cardinals' trounced Seahawks 17-10 in Seattle on Sunday to keep their postseason hopes alive . Fitzgibbon's comment was posted shortly after the game.
"Losing a football game sucks," Fitzgibbon wrote. "Losing to a desert racist wasteland sucks a lot."
He later posted this message: “Upset re hawks loss, and failure of smart immigration reform--shouldn't have conflated the 2 though. Happy holidays, better for both in '14”
Washington state Republican Rep. J.T. Wilcox retaliated to Fitzgibbon's message on Twitter by commenting "makes us all look bad."
