A woman was found dead in her hot Tempe apartment, where the temperature inside was 113 degrees, police said.
According to the Tempe police, they were called to the Santa Fe Court Apartments near Scottsdale Road and Weber Drive for a welfare check. The victim, Priscilla Diane Games, 49, was not seen or heard from for some time. They found Games dead in her apartment, when they reached on the scene.
Alexandria Jones, a tenant at the Santa Fe Court apartments, said that, “Police came to my door last night asking how long my A/C has been off that someone had passed away, (and) they’re not sure why."
The air conditioning in the apartment was stopped working. Tempe fire crews told police that it was 113 degrees inside the unit.
“When I walked into her apartment, it was like a furnace in there,” friend Samantha Crea said, after Games’ death.
Games didn’t let anyone know she’d been living in sweltering heat.
“She was always there for someone else, but hated to ask for help herself,” Crea said.
“It’s ridiculous. Living in 113 degrees? It’s absurd,” neighbor Lane Carraway said.
“Even if they determine that her health is what took her, I know that she was well controlled. I monitored her regularly, and I just know that the heat had to have played a role in it," said Samantha Crea, a close family friend.
“It’s ridiculous. They need to fix it," said Peggy Mostille, another tenant.
Tempe police said that, if the autopsy determines Games’ death was heat-related, they could pursue negligent homicide charges.
