Arizona senior offensive lineman Zach Hemmila has died in his sleep, athletic director Greg Byrne announced.
According to Byrne and UA coach Rich Rodriguez, Hemmila, 22, died in his sleep overnight.A cousin found him this morning. Further details were not provided.
“The only thought on my mind right now is with Zach Hemmila’s family,” Rodriguez said, fighting back tears. “We lost a great young man. Everybody in our program is hurting.” "We talked two nights ago," Rodriguez said. "Just out of the blue (he) came down and sat beside me and talked about everything, how happy he was."
Byrne said that, "We're just so deeply saddened." "Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and the team, his teammates and the coaches and everybody involved. He's a Chandler kid, and means so much to our program."
Dr. Gregory Hess, chief medical examiner for Pima County will examine the body of Hemmila and results of those tests are expected to come in 4 to 6 weeks. “That’s about all we know right now,” Hess said.
