The former WBA Interim super-light weight title holder and rising star Jose Benavidez, was shot in his leg and little finger by an unknown assailant.

According to the Phoenix police, Benavidez Jr. was sent to a nearby hospital for injuries which were non-life-threatening.

Sgt John Howard, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, said that, "He was apparently walking in his neighborhood and was approached by a stranger, who asked him a question and then shot him."

"That is what he said. He was taken to a local hospital. He should recover. His injuries are not life threatening." No arrests have been made.
Last month, the 24-year-old beat Francisco Santana on the under-card of Terrence Crawford's super-lightweight defence in Las Vegas to claim his 25th straight win.
