Four people, including two teenage girls, were taken to the hospital in critical condition after a two-car collision at 59th Avenue and Camelback Road on the Glendale/Phoenix border, authorities said.
According to Phoenix fire spokesman Capt. Aaron Ernsberger, firefighters with the Phoenix Fire Department and Glendale Fire Department used hydraulic extraction methods to free the injured individuals from the wreckage.
Glendale police said a car and a truck collided head on at the intersection.
Ernsberger said that, the four people critically injured were a woman, a man and two teenagers. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision is in the custody of the Glendale Police Department.
The incident is investigating by the Glendale Police Department. They investigating if impairment was a factor in the collision, police spokesman Sgt. Scott Waite said.
Officers who first arrived at the scene noticed signs of impairment on one of the drivers involved and are trying to determine the exact circumstances of the collision, Waite added.
Ernsberger advised drivers to avoid the area, because police from Glendale and Phoenix will be investigating for several hours. Authorities have shut down the intersection of 59th Avenue and Camelback Road, according to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation.
The Phoenix Police Department and Glendale Police Department were not immediately available for comment.
