Arizona Bill 1350 expands Definition of Terrorism

According to a new Senate bill Arizona would expand the definition of a terror attack and increase the minimum time a person found guilty on terror related charges would spend in prison.

Mark Brnovich Arizona’s Attorney General said that Senate Bill 1350 will fix a major hole in the ‘Arizona law’ which state’s that an attack can only be defined as terror, if a state building is attacked. The 1350 bill was by Brnovich and introduced by state Senator Warren Petersen.

Should SB 1350s be signed into law, other facilities — such as mosques, churches and stadiums — would be added to that list.

Brnovich said that they know the lone wolf actors and so called homegrown jihadists, they target public places and it is not necessary to be a government building.

SB 1350 creates a minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment for those who are convicted on terror charges in Arizona.

“Instead of being eligible for probation, it would be a mandatory prison term,” Brnovich said.

Few outdated portions of the state’s terror laws have been updated in SB 1350,  which Brnovich noticed during the prosecution of Mahin Khan, which was the first terror case handled at the state level in Arizona.

Mahin Khan was convicted to plan a terror attack on Arizona DMV office and the Jewish community Center and was sentenced eight years in prison

Brnovich said, “For the new there is no difference between the DMV office and a pizza joint”. “The people there are all human beings and everyone deserves the maximum protection of the law”.

SB 1350 would be the first update to Arizona’s terror laws in 10 years.

Brnovich said “those who mean us harm keeps changing and adopting new tactics and we as law enforcement have to make sure that even we are doing every possible thing to change and adapt to what they are doing.”

The 1350 bill must be approved by state lawmakers before heading to the desk Governor of Arizona Doug Ducey’s desk.
