Trump Defends His Controversial “Pardon” To The Former Sheriff

President trump is defending his decision of pardoning former Maricopa country Sheriff Joe Arpaio by calling him a “Patriot” who loves his country.

As per the earlier speculations, Joe arpaio has received presidential pardon, president trump has already hinted in his Phoenix rally that he was willing to give his pardon to the former sheriff.

As he said in his rally “I’ll make a prediction, I think he’s going to be just fine”. During his speech president also said that he was not issuing the pardon in rally “As it will create a controversy”.

Joe Arpaio was convicted on July 31 of criminal contempt of court for failing to stop traffic patrols targeting immigrants after being ordered to do so by federal judge.

Trump was asked about his decision in a joint press conference with president of Finland.

President says that, “Arpaio did a great job for the people of Arizona, but was treated unfairly by Obama administration”. Adding to his above statement he said, “I think people of Arizona who really know him best would argue with me”.

He also mentioned other controversial pardons made by past presidents. Trump’s pardon for Arpaio is his first use of presidential clemency powers, which are sweeping and doesn’t require consultation among other administration agencies.

The Justice department said that president did not consult any lawyers before issuing the pardon. The decision throw backlash from many including the two republican senators and House speaker Paul Ryan.
