To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, people across the valley on Sunday paid tribute to military veterans.

The Veterans Day events honored service members prior and existing, carrying on a practice that goes back to the 1918 ceasefire of the bloody "Great War."

At a ceremony with other world leaders, President Donald Trump noted the supreme sacrifices that so many have made.

"The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics," he said. "We renew our sacred obligation to memorialize our fallen heroes."

In Arizona, Tempe hosted a Veterans Day parade that led from Arizona State University to Tempe Beach Park, followed by a picnic.

Granny Award-winning artist R. Carlos Nakai and the Arizona Territorial Brass Band commemorated military service member at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix.

American Indian veterans who are part of the Arizona Territory Gourd Society esteemed the day with conventional dances at Pueblo Grande Museum.

In Scottsdale, the concert was held by Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Veterans stood up as the songs of their military branches were sung by the choir.

Lewis Smith, one of the singers in the choir, said he was there because he sings with the church and has relatives who are veterans, including an uncle who served in World War I.

"I got a lot of family in the military," he said.

Ron Kupinski had a great uncle who deceased in World War II and at present has two sons-in-law in the Army and the Air Force.

"I'm here because I am a veteran," said Kupinski, an attendee who served in both the Navy and the Marine Corps, "and to honor the veterans and be a part of this."

Kupinski said he wished younger generations showed more appreciation for what veterans have gone through in terms of liberty and freedom.
