NASA faces a significant crisis as astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore find themselves stranded on the International Space Station (ISS). Initially planned for an 8-day mission, their return has been indefinitely delayed due to critical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Faced with this predicament, NASA is exploring alternative methods to bring the astronauts back to Earth. On Wednesday, the agency announced that it is examining various options to ensure the safe return of its astronauts. One proposed solution is to extend their stay until 2025, with the possibility of using SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, as a contingency plan. This move underscores the intense rivalry between Boeing and SpaceX in the commercial space sector. Kenneth Bowersox, NASA's Associate Administrator for Space Operations, addressed the challenges of retrieving the astronauts and discussed potential solutions at a press conference. He emphasized that relying solely on the Starliner for their return may not be feasible, stating, "We have the option to bring them back on another vehicle." Williams and Wilmore, who were launched aboard Boeing's Starliner, have now been in space for over two months.
The International Space Station (ISS) administrators are now openly exploring alternative options to bring the astronauts home, despite initial hesitation. NASA's Commercial Crew Program manager, Steve Stich, has highlighted the agency's collaboration with SpaceX to prepare for the potential return of the astronauts on the Crew 9 mission. This plan involves selecting only two of the four astronauts initially assigned to Crew 9 and adding additional spacesuits for the other two, Wilmore and Williams. NASA has announced that the Crew 9 mission launch has been postponed from mid-August to September 25th, 2024, allowing more time for preparations. Stich has detailed the plan, stating that the Dragon spacecraft for Crew 9 has been set up to have the flexibility to accommodate only two passengers for the flight up, while also enabling the return of all four crew members in February 2025.
The astronauts may travel home with the Crew 9 team, but officials have not made a final choice yet. They say it could take a week or more to reach a conclusion. If the astronauts return on a SpaceX vehicle, it would be a major setback for Boeing. The company has struggled to keep up with SpaceX and was counting on this mission to go well. The Starliner spacecraft faced various technical hurdles upon reaching the International Space Station, including leakages in its propulsion system and thruster failures. "Our primary plan is to bring back Butch and Suni on the Starliner," Stich explained. "Nevertheless, we have meticulously planned alternative solutions to ensure we have other options available." The persistent problems with the Starliner, coupled with the potential need to rely on SpaceX, exemplify the intricacies and obstacles encountered in contemporary space exploration, underscoring the vital importance of dependable spacecraft to safeguard the well-being of astronauts.
