This was in contrast to the previous presidential debate, where Trump and Biden did not shake hands. Throughout the debate, Harris maintained direct eye contact with Trump while answering questions and countering his statements.

According to former New Jersey Governor and ABC political commentator Chris Christie, former president Trump was "unprepared" for the debate. Christie said the person responsible for Trump's debate preparation should be fired, and called Trump's awkward remark about people eating pets "a huge fail". Christie further warned that Trump needs to work harder, or he will lose the election. Fox News host and political analyst Brit Hume stated that Kamala Harris performed better than the former president. Hume asserted that Trump had a poor night, as he repeatedly raised his old complaints, and that it was Kamala Harris' night.
