Lavatory cleaners discovered a stash of 24 gold bars worth over $1.1 million in an airplane toilet on Wednesday.
The Jet Airways plane that was flying from Bangkok to Kolkata and was scheduled to go to Patna next, was being cleaned at Kolkata when the cleaners discovered two bags of gold stashed inside, Customs official Mona Priyadarshini said. The gold bars, weight 1 kg each, was confiscated by the customs.
The government recently increased the import duty on gold that has encouraged and increased smuggling, the officials said.
