Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned meat in Mumbai for four days in view of the Jain fasting season. It came just days after the ban of sale of meat by neighboring Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC), led by BJP, for eight days during the fasting season of 'Paryushan'.
Although ban of meat is not new to Mumbai, #MeatBan has been trending on Twitter since the announcement came from BMC on Monday evening. It actually did not go well on this social media. The announcement has seen opposing reactions through comments ranging from comic to fervent.
The BMC had been observing and restricting meat sale and slaughter in Mumbai for two days during the Jain festival, through a 1994 order. The number of days was extended to four days in 2015. The days on which the meat ban would be observed are 10 September, 13 September, 17 September and 18 September. Just earlier in 2015, Mumbai has seen a total ban on sale and slaughter of beef in Maharastra.
Jain population in Mumbai, which has a mixture of cultures, is over 8.5 lakhs. While the BMC and BJP claimed that the decision was made keeping the sentiments of the Jain community in view, Opposition parties like Shiv Sena are opposing the ban.
