Veterinarians are warning pet owners about a new canine flu that has entered in the valley. 11 cases had been highlighted between Tucson and Casa Grande while eight cases have been noticed in the Maricopa County.

If you notice any unusual changes in your dog like, lethargic, not eating, coughing, you may contact your veterinarian. The virus can be spread up to 50 feet when an infected dog coughs or barks. The virus is contagious for up to 30 days.

Veterinarians are recommending pet owners get your pet vaccinated, and keep in mind that if you are boarding your pet over the holidays, your dog will likely come into contact with various other dogs.

Dogs that are infected with the canine influenza virus may develop two different syndromes. If the dog is mildly infected then, it will have a cough that is typically moist and can have nasal discharge. Occasionally, it will be more of a dry cough. In most of the cases, the symptoms will last 10 to 30 days and usually will go away on its own. On the other hand, in severe cases, generally dogs have a high fever (above 104 degrees Fahrenheit), the virus affects capillaries in the lungs, so the dog may cough up blood and may have trouble breathing.

Coughing, anorexia fever, sneezing and malaise are the general symptoms of the virus. If you notice any of them in your pet you may give a call to your veterinarians.
