The Gandhi Scion was of course successful in ousting the Mayawati led UP government as results are just coming in but failed to garner substantial gains for Congress.
Extensive touring, mind blowing speeches of the Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi could achieve just 50 percent of his objective. The election updates on the Uttar Pradesh electorate which has gone up for counting since today morning speak volumes of the voter mind set. As results are trickling down Samajwadi Party led by Mulayam Singh is much in the reckoning with leading in 151 constituencies, BJP is leading in 59 and Congress in 46. The worst is the ruling party BSP just leading in 89 constituencies, as per reports.
In early trends, the BJP is the surprise package in UP, doing unexpectedly well. Has the Congress campaign won? Probably partially because it had managed to uproot the Dalit based BSP but could not hamper the chances of SP, which the Congress claimed as the Goons Party. Today’s highlight is the BSP Lady of power Mayawati seems set to be the day's biggest loser; her second-term dreams seem dashed. The next to be watched is the tough battle that is ensuing between Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav of the SP, Mulayam Singh’s son and a key functionary in the party.
What does this mean and how does this reflect the mindset of the people. Critics feel that the Rahul effect as the Congress claimed was only partial as it had just fifteen new constituencies added to its band wagon. On the other hand BSP was losing out in 91 constituencies were it boasted of a majority earlier. But predominantly as in Indian electorate people desired a change and were rather fed up with the weird whimsical acts of the BSP leader in power. As I write this the scales seem to be ever favoring the SP.
Situation at other places seem to favor the party more than UP, where the entire Congress clan concentrated. Getting back to UP, out here the forecast for a hung assembly is evident as of now. But eventually during the course of the day a better understanding could be arrived at as seats will be announced. Right now all roads to the Raj Bhavan where the Governor resides seems too hogged by politicians, because he is their only solace for a hung assembly.
