This article inspired from popular media content has been depicted below for reader enrichment. But thank God for the disaster turning hoax.
The tremors at Indonesia (Bandh Aceh, Aceh province) measured 8.6, was initially termed as 8.9 on the Richter’s scale. The massive tremor was to stir Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The shake at Bandh Aceh triggered Tsunami alert in almost 28 countries, on Wednesday. The tension was gripped in most coastal parts after the dreaded experience in 2004 of the devastating Tsunami that destructed many parts of the Asian sub continent. But by the grace of good prayers it turned out to be a hoax call by the nature.
On a query to the Chief Scientist at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, R.K. Chadha, he replied, “Tremors are felt at faraway locations due to surface waves produced by an earthquake. Surface waves cause a lateral movement of the particles in the earth's medium. The earth behaves like an elastic medium when seismic waves are travelling.” Comparing the 2004 quake and the present one the Scientist said that the former was due to thrust fault while the later was due to strike-slip fault. Hence the continent was saved from the disastrous Tsunami. He added that “To generate giant tsunami waves, there should be great vertical displacement of the water column. This happens only in the case of a thrust fault [the December 2004 quake] or a dip-slip fault. Strike-slip fault will not generate tsunami waves.”
People were much relieved when the warning was lifted by the authorities. But the earthquake had distorted the continent for a few moments. The powerful earthquake was followed by series of aftershocks in Aceh province, Indonesia on April 11, 2012. The tremors sent shivers to many Asian Countries including India. No reports of causalities or damages are reported. (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
