Indian Premier League fifth season opened in a glitterati but failed to live upto the fans expectations. The opening match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Wednesday dampened the spirits of the mid night oil burners. The opening match between the former champions and home team Chennai Super Kings and the Champion league winners Mumbai Indians was a flop. With the Chennai team lead by Mahender Singh Dhoni making a cameo of innings, by winding up at 112 for 10wickets in the twentieth over. The Chennai innings were in a very bad shape and dismal performance. Adding to this there were three run outs in the innings. There were just six fours and one six in 19.5 overs and not a single boundary in the last ten overs. Notable batting scores that are worth were by Suresh Raina who scored 36 runs. On the Mumbai side Malinga, Ojha and Pollard claimed two wickets each. Initially, Mumbai won the toss and elected to field.
The Mumbai Indians who came into bat in the second half had their stalwart batsman Sachin Tendulkar out of the crease as retired hurt. He had till then scored 16 runs. But the effort R Levi who made a half century and J Franklin who made a quarter century saved the Mumbai from a face off. Mumbai made 115 for just two wickets and won the match in the seventeenth over. On the whole the first match was a poor advertisement for the tournament. Fans were much disappointed and blamed the CSK. The champions needed more coordination.
