Indeed, less than a year ago, both Adam Eaton and Tyler Skaggs were key components of the D-backs’ long term plans. On Tuesday, the D-backs hit the “Send” button and traded both players in a three-team deal that brings slugging outfielder Mark Trumbo to Arizona.

Arizona also will receive a player to be named or cash from each of the other clubs in the deal made at the winter meetings.

Specifically, Adam Eaton moves from the Diamondbacks outfield to the White Sox, while left-handed pitcher Tyler Skaggs goes from Arizona to Los Angeles, and pitcher Hector Santiago heads to the Angels from the White Sox.

Intended to hit in the middle of the D-backs lineup and provide protection behind All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, Trumbo has hit more than 30 home runs each of the past two seasons.

In 2013, Trumbo drove in 100 runs but did not hit for average (.234) and struck out 184 times.

Currently constructed, the D-backs lineup appears to be heavily right-handed, including Goldschmidt.

Eaton hit .252 with three homers, 22 RBIs and 44 strikeouts in 250 at-bats for the Diamondbacks last season, when he also dealt with injuries and played with a trio of minor league teams.

Skaggs was drafted by the Angels 40th overall in 2009 and was dealt to the D-backs in August 2010 as part of the Dan Haren deal.

Last season, Skaggs made seven starts for the D-backs in going 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA in seven starts.
Still only 22 years old, Skaggs owns a 3-6 career mark.

In addition, media reports say the D-backs have offered a one-year deal to pitcher Joba Chamberlain for approximately $3 million.
