The latest news reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir is in line to become the next head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Sources with connections to the BCCI have revealed that Gambhir’s appointment is highly likely and that the BCCI is making a strong push for him to take on the role. One high-profile IPL franchise owner, close to the top brass of the BCCI, has even gone so far as to say that Gambhir’s appointment is a "done deal" and will be announced after the IPL final. Despite this, Gambhir has remained quiet on the matter, even when questioned by his KKR teammates. This news comes as the BCCI invited fresh applications for the head coach role, with Rahul Dravid’s extended tenure coming to an end soon, causing much speculation.
The post of head coach is up for grabs and reports suggest that several names, including Stephen Fleming, are being considered. However, the name that has stood out is Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian batsman and World Cup winner. The BCCI has shown interest in acquiring his services and it is believed that one factor bringing them together is the idea of serving the country. Despite his lack of coaching experience at a professional level, Gambhir's personality and mentorship have proven to be successful, as evidenced by Kolkata Knight Riders' third IPL title this season. While it is unclear if Gambhir has formally applied for the role, he did meet with BCCI officials and more discussions are expected. The deadline for applications was Monday. Ricky Ponting and Andy Flower have already been ruled out of the running for head coach. The individual who secures the position will be contracted until the next ODI World Cup in 2027, and India will be seeking to rectify their lack of ICC titles since 2013.
