Finally, here comes JUSTICE for the Bangalore law student, who was brutally gang-raped by eight men on Bangalore University's Jnanabharathi campus on October 13, last year.

Handing out judgment on the case, the Bangalore Court sentenced the six accused to life term today. The seventh accused is absconding while the eighth is a minor. His case is being handled in the juvenile court.

The quantum of sentence was pronounced by sessions judge Krishnamurthy B Sangannavar.


An undergraduate student of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, the girl was with her collegemate when she was attacked by the gang of drunk men who pulled her into the woods and raped her.

The convicted — Maddura (20), Doddaeeraiah (19), Shivanna (20), Eeraiah (20), Yelayaiah (23) and Rama (50) — all belong to the Iruliga tribe and are residents of Dasegowdana Doddi in Ramanagaram taluk.

Public prosecutor Sanjay Kumar Venkataramana Bhat said that the prosecution had appealed tfor the maximum punishment in this case and adequate compensation to the victim, under the new scheme of Section 357(A) of the CrPC.

"Defence counsel argued that his clients have families and urged the court to take a lenient view on the ground that they were sole breadwinners," he said.
