A huge mulch fire in El Mirage is creating a Smokey mess for a lot of the Valley. Firefighters say a mulch fire in El Mirage will likely burn for several days.
The fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday at a mulch and firewood facility near Butler Drive and Dysart Road.
The fire, which is in a 15-foot deep pit, was still smoldering Sunday morning.
Seven fire departments battled intense flames, which broke out at 8:40 p.m. Firefighters from Glendale, Phoenix, Surprise, El Mirage, Goodyear, Rural Metro and Luke Air Force Base tried unsuccessfully to bring the blaze under control, El Mirage Fire Capt. Ed Cunningham said.
Everything that could burn is burning now. We want that to happen as quickly as possible to eliminate the future impact with the air quality. Unfortunately, there just isn't a way to put water on this because of the size of this," Williams said. "Time is going to have to do the firefight out there."
There is no word yet on what started the fire. No homes are threatened, according to the El Mirage Fire Department. Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause. Ed Cunningham
