According to reports an Arizona lawmaker is planning to rise up the tax on Gas.
State representative Noel Campbell said to keep Arizona’s highways and bridges safe, there was no other option but to increase the tax on Gas price.
Campbell plans to raise Arizona’s gas tax by more than 33 per cent. Right now there are a few places in the valley, where a person can find gas for under $2 a gallon.
The slow rise comes as Campbell is starting to promote and attempt to convince fellow lawmakers to support his plan.
The increase in tax would cost motorist two to three times more every time they fill up their vehicles. Campbell is hoping for improved freeways and widening certain congested areas will offset the frustration with having to pay more for gas.
Campbell said that his wish was not personal and he does not want to raise taxes, but there was no other way.
Many motorists who questioned about the idea of an increased gas tax and had no idea how much tax they pay now.
"I couldn't tell you," said one driver. "I have absolutely no clue."
Arizona’s current tax is 18 cents a gallon, which ranks as one of the lowest in the United States. A 10 cent increase would put Arizona in the upper third
Campbell said Arizona need’s to raise revenue to take care of roads, bridges and infrastructure.
Arizona’s last tax hike was in the early 1990s.
Campbell said the hike in tax would bring in about 285 million a year. "I don't think 10 cents a gallon is that horrible, I really don't," said Campbell.
For every 15,000 miles, assuming you get 25 miles per gallon, you would pay an extra $60 a year.
One motorist said the idea was fair and he can see the benefits if they make the improvements.
Even Representative Campbell admits his idea is a long shot, but he will continue to work toward gaining support for it.
