Vishu:
Vishu is the Hindu new year festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala and nearby, Tulunadu region of Karnataka.
The festival falls on the month of Medam in the Malayalam calendar, usually in the second week of April.
Vishu literally means equal, and in the festival context, it connotes the completion of spring equinox.
Vishu is notable for its solemnity and the general lack of pomp show that characterize other Hindu festivals of Kerala such as Onam.
The same day is observed as the traditional the New Year by Hindus in other regions, but know by other names such as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Vaisakhi in central and north India.
Puthandu:
Puthandu also known as Puthuvarusham or Tamil New Year, it is the first day on the Tamil calendar. The date of the festival is set with the solar cycle of the lunisolar Hindu calendar, as first day of Chithirai (First month in Tamil calendar). This festival typically falls on or about 14th April every year.
