Arizona State Board of Education To Review New School Grading System

The Arizona State Board of Education has decided to review the new school grading system and address the technical issues.

The move has come after several schools raised concerns over the new grading system, which was planned to release from October 9. The decision has also been confirmed by the President of the State Board of Education, Tim Carter on Monday.

One of issues is that around 108 school with “non-typical grade configuration” has received more than one letter grade. But these schools teaches from grade 3-11 and does not fit in State’s high school grading or K-8 system.

Apart from this, the board will also address the appeals raised by 71 schools due to various reasons such as shortage of qualified teachers.

Carter has also said that the board will also review the coding as well as calculations method of deciding the grading. However, he has also said that he expect that the grading of more than 1800 schools will remain the same even after the review process.

The whole review process will be discussed in the board’s final meeting of the year, which will take place on December 4.

Large number of schools has raised questions over the structuring of the new grading system by terming it as “devastating”. The principals of the school have also requested the board to take the data points outside of AzMERIT to take into the account of the new grading system.
