The Arizona State Board of Education is initiating steps to try and fix a record keeping problem that could put students in danger, which was decided after an emergency meeting of the board members.
According to board members, 46 teachers, who have been disciplined, got their disciplinary records wiped clean.
This means educators who got in trouble for everything from being drunk in the class to molesting children could have ended up back in the classroom, said authorities.
Diane Douglas, Superintendent of Public Instruction said, “I'm shocked and appalled that this has been allowed to continue all these time.”
Greg Miller, a board member of The Arizona State Board of Education told, "That's shameful and it needs to be fixed and it will be fixed."
The board members decided to take steps to immediately fix the mistakes. They also look forward to operating procedure that led the mistakes in the first place.
Douglas said, "People not being properly supervised and not dotting the i's and crossing the t's the way they should be is what led to this problem."
Douglas wants to direct the investigators responsible for the disciplinary reports. The reports, to be placed in the department of education under her supervision. On the other hand, other board members are not supporting her idea, they want the investigators to be supervised under the authority of the education board.
"I think there is a need to keep the investigative unit, separate," told by Miller.
