The Coconino County authorities have reported safely detonating an unexploded military explosive ordnance found at Fort Tuthill.
The county Sheriff’s office deputies responded to Fort Tuthill Tuesday evening after a citizen reported finding what he believed was an unexploded military ordnance.
The Flagstaff bomb disposal squad was called, and it was confirmed that it was indeed a military explosive that may have been left behind during a military exercise.
Since the explosive seemed viable, they sought help from the Explosive Bomb Disposal Unit at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale. The officials only agreed to carry out the disposal during daylight.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s officials guarded the site throughout the night and early Wednesday.
The Luke Air Force Base unit arrived and exploded the device at 12:25 p.m
The explosive is suspected to be left behind during a military exercise since Fort Tuthill served as a training site for the 158th Infantry troops from 1929 to 1948.
Currently, it serves as a recreational area for the county and military personnel.
