Journey by trains have lost significance for many. However, some of the best scenes are seen during train journeys. It's quite enjoyable to see a beautiful scenary approaching and then continuing for some time, as it happens when you look out of a train while passing through scenic spots. Aeroplanes and cars have replaced trains due to their speed and convenience. But in some parts of the world nothing can beat the joy and excitement that a train journey can bring to tourists when they encounter beautiful places that are otherwise inaccessible.
According to a survey done by Quora.com, a question-and-answer site, it was revealed that travellors love to travel by train in certain countries for the scenic experience that the countryside has to offer. Five countries have been identified by the site – India, Japan, Switzerland, South Africa and United states for their incredible experience during train journeys.
India
India has been voted a favorite among travellers who would love to see its scenic beauty through a train journey. The country has a lot to offer from the snowy Himalayas in the north/east to the misty/rainy western ghats, to the deserts of Rajasthan. Take a train journey if you want to experience the best sceneries the country has to offer. For those who love their comfort, they can take a trip onboard luxury trains like the Golden Chariot that offers eight-day journey through south India. The Palace on Wheels and Maharaja Express will also take you around in sheer luxury.
Japan
The land of the rising sun has the most reliable train system in the world. The Shinkansen (bullet train) is very efficient, fast and clean. Shinkansen is tourist-friendly and has English-speaking staff, but it runs between major cities only. Trains in Japan run on time, but it's recommended that tourists buy a Japan Rail Pass as it is easy and convenient for travellers. A pass allows the traveller one to two weeks of unlimited travel on bullet trains as well as regular trains.
Switzerland
Train-rides in Switzerland are highly recommended for its Alpine scenery. In terms of timeliness and convenience Switzerland is just behind Japan. The journey by any train is extremely scenic, especially those in Berner Oberland and Valais. Take a trip on the Pilatus railway or the Rhaetische Bahn train line and you wont regret it. You can take trains randomly to the remotest parts of the country and you will love the experience.
South Africa
South Africa is a favourite when it come to train-side scenic destination, with its sprawling wine country and mountain vistas. Luxury trains like the Blue Train and Rovos Rail takes you from Cape Town to Pretoria in comfort and style. It is a great experience travelling in these trains with their marble tiles and gold trimmings, king size beds and also separate bathrooms.
United States
Another country where train journeys are reccomded for enjoying its views is the United States. The US Pacific Coast onboard the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, runing between Los Angeles and San Dieg, with its serene ocean views is a favorite of the tourists. If you take the Amtrak Coast Starlight you will encounter gorgeous views of mountains, coastlines, forests, lakes and river in your journey from Los Angeles to Seattle.
The final destination of the holiday is no doubt important, but if the journey is also beautiful your holiday becomes an incredible experience.
