World War II was effectively over with Japan’s unconditional surrender to the US. A few days before this, the US planes dropped two atomic bombs, one in Hiroshima and another one in Nagasaki, the first and only time in the World history to use nuclear weapons in a war. Immense destruction incinerated huge number of people and buildings. Its survivors are left with psychological and physical scars life long.
Hiroshima bombing
August 6, 1945 remained in the history as the most destructive day to human race. It was described by then US President (Harry) Truman as, for the first time a bomb with more power than 20,000 tons of TNT and with potential to produce more than 2,000 times the blast of a powerful bomb ever dropped before, was dropped in Hiroshima, which was a Japanese army base. This was the world’s first atomic bomb. After it was dropped smoke rose around 20,000 feet above Hiroshima, Japan. The World’s first atomic bomb destroyed over 60% - 4.1 square miles - of Hiroshima, city with the population of 343,000 people.
Nagasaki bombing
The world’s second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. The bomb was considered as the most destructive weapon ever invented by humans. Moments after the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, a mushroom cloud rose. With 211,000 population, Nagasaki was an important railway and shipping center of Japan.
About the bombing, the Tokyo radio said that, "The impact of the bomb was so terrific that practically all living things, human and animals, were literally seared to death by the tremendous heat and pressure engendered by the blast. All of the dead and injured were burned beyond recognition.”
"With houses and buildings crushed, including the emergency medical facilities, the authorities are having their hands full in giving every available relief possible under the circumstances.”
Atom bomb report by The Nippon Times
News on ‘Bombing of Hiroshima’ on 6 August 1945 was approved for printing and it contained information about the war in considerable detail in the Nippon Times.
Referring to the U.S. B-29 Superfortress bomber, the News Paper read ‘Hiroshima was attacked by a small number of Superforts at 8:20 a.m. Monday’. ‘The enemy dropped explosives and incendiaries. Damage is now being investigated.'
In an August 9 report, the News Paper, quoted a Vatican spokesman as referring to the bomb as “a further step in the direction of indiscriminate deployment of means of destruction.” By this time, the city of Nagasaki was destroyed on 9 August 1945 by the second atomic bomb in the world history. But this was mentioned by the News Paper on 12 August for unexplained reasons.
Protests accusing the U.S.
On 10 August 1945, a protest was delivered by the Imperial authorities against Washington through the Swiss government. Protest said that due to its haphazard nature, the U.S. disavowed the use poison gas and the bomb is even worse.
The U.S. was accused of committing a sin by using a bomb, which was against the culture of the human race to harm indiscriminately. And this one was far more cruel than any missile or weapon ever used in the past.
Japan’s unconditional surrender
The history’s Second World War that caused the great flood of destruction and death ended with Japan’s unconditional surrender.
On 15 August 1945, Emperor Hirohito’s recorded address was broadcast to the nation and it was then that the people of Japan learned about the surrender. The emperor announced that Japan was defeated in the World War II.
Hirohito said that the reason behind Japan’s surrender was that the Allies had begun to utilize a new cruel bomb and to continue the war will only lead to the extinction of human civilization.
Views of Hiroshima survivors
Junko Morimoto, Hiroshima survivor, said to ABC that the history and story behind the tragic event should not be faded away by the time. Instead of just looking into the bombing alone, it is important to know and understand the reasons behind it. Otherwise, the same could be repeated again in the future.
Lets hope the devastation never repeats again anywhere, any time in the World. Let peace prevail and bless the human race and life on earth.
