In an unusual and interesting incident, a 71-year-old man had kept 70 animals which included 54 dogs and 19 cats in his mobile home. John Koepke who owned these animals considered them as his children.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, these animals were staying in filth and many needed medical assistance. "Their eyes are matted shut and they're weeping," Officer Christopher Hegstrom, spokesman for Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
Koepke was “highly emotional” and refused to surrender them to detectives.
However, John Koepke was earlier prohibited from owning animals till May 2015 due to his involvement in an animal hoarding case in 2011.
Videos taken by the Sheriff’s office showed feces lying on the floor of the home. One of the cats was nursing three Chihuahua puppies.
"At least the cat was saving some animals," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said, reported AZCentral.com. "I won’t say the same thing for this guy."
As per the Sheriff, Koepke will be detained for his inability to provide proper shelter to the animals. He may also be charged for lack of medical assistance to them, once medical evaluation is done.
