Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton's campaign said he has raised about $985,900 for his re-election bid. Stanton requested the city voters to give him another four years in office, the contest is financially lopsided in his favor. His opponents are two lesser-known challengers: business owner Anna Brennan, who raised $11,000 and educator Matt Jette, who raised no money.
Candidates contesting for the Phoenix mayor and City Council is required to file reports in the last week showing their contributions and expenses through May 31. Stanton has been raising money right from 2011 while Brennan and Jette didn't enter the race until April.
"The campaign was alerted to the fact that due to an error in our report, we under-reported our fundraising totals," campaign spokesman Andy Barr said in an e-mail. "We regret the error and will be filing an amended report this week."
"I really do think it's a testament to what he's done the last four years with the city," campaign manager Lisa Fernandez said of Stanton's fund raising haul. "People like progress and they like seeing accomplishments."
"We want to elect people who are credible; that is, those who are honest, authentic and not purchased by the largest donors," Jette said in a statement. "However, the media reports, credibility as meaning probability and in doing so, they merely look at the bank accounts of candidates."
