Cholesterol Drug Cuts Coronavirus Infection by 70 Percent

The coronavirus pandemic left the entire globe in strain and crores of people are left shattered because of this deadly virus which has new strains emerging on a timely basis. A drug that was designed to treat cholesterol is said to cut the infection of coronavirus by 70 percent told experts. The conclusions are derived as per the research from the additional clinical trials that are conducted recently. A team of researchers from Italy and the UK conducted a research and it was published in Frontiers in Pharmacology journal Friday. Fenofibrate and fenofibric acid which can control cholesterol showed a significant reduction in coronavirus infection in the human cells. The drug has to be used in safe and approved concentrations told the research.

Dr. Elisa Vicenzi of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan said that the drug has the potential to reduce the severity of the Covid-19 symptoms along with the virus spread. The drug is also very cheap and is available across the world. The experts also hinted about the drug's good safety profile and the extensive history of clinical use. The additional trials are currently conducted and they are taking place at the University of Pennsylvania and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Though there are several vaccinations available in the market for coronavirus, the experts say that there is a need to control the severity of the symptoms among the infected.

There are several nations that are struggling to purchase the vaccinations and the stock would be unavailable till 2022. The cholesterol drug can be used to manage coronavirus patients who develop symptoms and are hospitalized.
