Why we get sick and how to stay healthy during cold and flu season. Here are some commonly asked questions and answers. Q. Can flying on an airplane make you sick? A. "Yes," says Bruce Polsky, chief of the division of infectious diseases at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York City. "Especially if you’re sitting within six feet of someone who is sneezing, coughing, and spewing germs into the dry air." Because the air is recirculated in the close quarters of the plane’s cabin, certain kinds of germs may stay suspended, and you can end up breathing them in. Drink lots of water, and consider using a saline nasal spray to keep your mucous membranes moist. Q. Can your toothbrush or lipstick reinfect you after you’ve been sick?A. It’s not likely. “If you’ve just come out of a cold, don’t toss it,” says Neil Schachter, a professor of pulmonary and critical care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. “Once you’ve had a particular viral illness, you’re protected from it.” Q. Can you get sick from touching a doorknob?A. Yes. Germs last longer than you think. “Viruses can survive up to three days on surfaces and inanimate objects,” says Chuck Gerba, a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. That’s why it’s a good idea to carry your own pen. To reduce the number of germs, be sure to zap hot spots (the phone, for instance) regularly at home and at work with a disinfecting product. Q. Can you catch the same cold or flu twice in the same season?A. You can’t get exactly the same one, as your body will have developed antibodies to it. But “cold and flu viruses mutate, so there are subtly different forms of the virus,” says Caroline Rudnick, an assistant professor of community and family medicine at St. Louis University. “Getting one type doesn’t protect you from another.” Even if you’ve had the flu vaccine, if a different strain of the flu virus is going around, you could catch it. Q. Is it safe to exercise with a cold?A. "Do a 'neck check': If your symptoms are in or above your neck―say, if you have a stuffy nose, a headache, and a mildly sore throat and you’re sneezing―it’s fine to work out," Schachter says. "But if your symptoms extend below the neck―if you have a cough, a fever, body aches, or chills―take a break from exercising until you feel better." Q. Can going outside with wet hair in the winter make you sick?A. Exposure to an infection, not cold temperatures, can make you sick. “But if your body gets cold, it could get physically stressed because it’s using a lot of energy to try to stay warm, and you might be more likely to catch an infection,” Rudnick explains. To avoid stressing your body unnecessarily, dry your hair before going out in the cold, or wear a hat.

Getting some sleep, even a short afternoon nap, may seem like a good thing for people with sleep disorders. But for those with insomnia and an already decreased desire to sleep at night, midday shut-eye can actually be counterproductive. So before you curl up on the couch this afternoon, consider whether your quick fix might backfire when you lie down in bed tonight. Getting through the day If you don't have a problem getting your z's at night, a quick nap can work wonders to pull you through a tiresome or sleep-deprived day. In fact, a 2008 study found that a 45-minute daytime nap can improve memory function. And previous studies have found that naps can lower blood pressure. Those who suffer from narcolepsy or shift-work syndrome may also benefit from daytime naps, says James Wyatt, director of the Sleep Disorders Service and Research Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Trouble sleeping at night If you have insomnia, naps present a problem, even if you feel tired during the day. Napping during the day can perpetuate bad sleep habits for people with temporary sleep issues caused by stress, illness, or jet lag too. "Even just a little bit of a power nap reduces your nighttime sleep drive," says Ralph Downey III, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. "The nap becomes nothing more than another episode of fragmented sleep."

While there are many great natural remedies for arthritis, homeopathy can be quite effective and is typically overlooked. This healing tradition is based on the ancient medical premise that “like cures like.” In other words, a natural substance that potentially causes a particular illness in the body can be used in a significantly diluted form to prompt the body to combat the illness and related symptoms. It sounds crazy but it is the philosophy now adopted by vaccine manufacturers when they develop flu shots and other chemical-based vaccines. Of course, homeopathy relies on only natural substances and avoids the toxic chemicals and additives found in most vaccines, thereby eliminating side-effects. The most commonly used homeopathic remedies for arthritis include: rhus tox, bryonia, apis, and belladonna. Rhus tox is best suited for people who experience symptom improvement from moving but tend to get stiff from rest. Bryonia is best for people whose symptoms worsen from movement. Keep reading for 2 more arthritis remedies, dosage instructions, and more… Apis is suitable for people with hot, burning, stinging pain and swelling. Belladonna is best suited for people who experience a rapid and violent onset of throbbing arthritic pain and red, hot, and swollen joints. Homeopathic remedies come in different potencies. The typical dosage is to start with a 6X or 30X remedy, taking three or four pellets and allowing them to dissolve under the tongue every 15 minutes for the first hour or two. After that, a typical dose is three pellets, three times daily. If you don’t see any improvement, a different remedy choice may work better for you. I believe homeopathy works best when it is taken with direction from an experienced homeopath. A skilled practitioner will take a holistic approach, asking many questions about your symptoms and the conditions that improve or worsen them. This helps the practitioner select homeopathic remedies that address physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual factors that may be affecting you.

Read More4 ways to a Happy, Healthy Winter December 26, 2011 18:18
The term “winter blues” gets tossed around a lot when days get short and chilly weather sets in. But regardless of the season, there’s plenty to be upbeat about—even if you can’t take a stroll in your shorts and tank top (unless you live in Florida). Here are some things that keep my winters from being anything but blue. 1. Don’t let the holidays stress you out For some, the holidays are a time of joy and togetherness—but for so many of us they’re just stressful. That feeling of “go, go, go” can wear you out and get you down. Don’t fall into that hustle-and-bustle trap. If you feel yourself heading in that direction, follow the tips in Holiday Stress Relief with Natural Remedies. 2. Keep your immune system strong There’s nothing worse than a prolonged bout of winter cold or flu, but inevitably there’s always “something going around.” Keep germs at bay by bolstering your immune system, which you can do by eating less sugary foods (sugar and your immune system don’t get along well), staying active, stressing less and sleeping at least eight hours each night. For excellent advice on immune system health, check out 12 Strategies to Strengthen Your Immune System (making more love is even on the list!). 3. Stay busy with fun projects I know some people who get the so-called winter blues because all the things they love to do involve being outside in the summer—so they end up feeling incredibly bored all winter, claiming there’s “nothing to do.” I say hogwash. Winter is a fantastic time to tackle cool, new projects. Whether you want to take on a big project like building an earth oven or try something a little smaller like setting up an indoor worm composting bin, sending handwritten letters to old friends, or knitting a hat, I bet you can find several activities that you’ll truly enjoy. 4. Do something every day that makes you feel cozy While summertime fun is fantastic, I think the feeling of coziness is one of the best feelings there is—and for me, true, authentic, downright coziness only happens in winter. So, for at least 30 minutes every day, do something that makes you feel cozy. Drink a great cup of tea. Build a fire. Put on some warm, fuzzy socks or slippers. Grab your favorite blanket and curl up with a good book. And enjoy!

Read More7 Tips for Stress-Free Holidays December 24, 2011 11:14
Holidays can be a stressful time for anybody, especially in today's day and age, with all the problems Americans are facing in this difficult economy. More and more people are suffering from negative stress. Stress takes a toll on our daily lives and our health and can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, anxiety and depression, among other problems.Rest assured, there are many things you can do before you run out to get a pill. Here’s a list of some of the most effective natural stress reducers. 1. Passionflower While passionflower has long been considered a “folk remedy” for anxiety and insomnia, a few studies have shown that the herb may actually be comparable in effectiveness to benzodiazepine drugs, which are used to treat stress. Though not proven, it is believed that passionflower works by increasing levels of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This lowers the activity of some brain cells, making you feel more relaxed.Passionflower is available in a variety of forms, including infusions, teas, liquid extracts and tinctures. It is not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or nursing. Consult your doctor before adding it to your diet, especially if you are taking other medications. 2. Massage This is kind of a no-brainer, right? Everybody loves a massage. But did you know that it’s been used as a stress reliever for thousands of years? Historically, the Chinese used massage to open blocked energy channels in order to improve health and Hippocrates, the “father of western medicine,” used friction for physical healing treatments. Today, we use massage to relax tense muscles, reduce pain and improve circulation, which can all do wonders for the mind. 3. Meditation Meditation, or mindfulness, only takes 15 to 30 minutes a day, which is possible even in a packed schedule. It’s also incredibly affordable, considering the only tool you need is your own mind. Just give yourself some silent time to let your thoughts run free or just focus on your breathing. That small amount of peace in your day can help you deal with or even release stress. 4. Exercise Whether it’s yoga, Tai Chi or running, exercise works much in the same way as meditation because it gives you the time to be alone with your thoughts (or an opportunity to let them go). However, exercise also has the added benefit of releasing endorphins into the brain, which improves your mood. It also prevents obesity and other health problems, giving you less to be stressed about. 5. Organize your life Organization offers a sense of control and peace of mind, and there’s a number of ways you can improve in this regard. If you’re the kind of person who’s always running around, it can help to make lists so that you remember everything. If you’re the kind of person who feels edgy in their own house, tidy up. Studies have shown the mere sight of clutter can put us on edge. 6. Eat healthy It’s actually been proven that junk food can make us depressed (not to mention fat) so clean up your diet. Healthy foods like whole grains and protein can improve your mood and give you long-lasting energy to tackle everything that comes your way during the day. Foods that are especially effective for stress-busting include blueberries, salmon and almonds, according to scientists. Also, put down that extra cup of coffee. While studies have shown that some coffee during the day can offer health benefits, too much caffeine will make you jittery and anxious, and eventually lead to a crash. 7. Sleep Sleep is the most important natural stress reducer of them all. Too little sleep leaves us cranky, irritable and on edge. Too much sleep can leave us sluggish and depressed. Try to find the right balance that allows you to feel well-rested and ready for the day. Promote better sleep by establishing bedtime rituals that signal to your brain that it’s time to fall asleep, avoid exercise in the three hours before sleep or take a warm bath. Certain foods can also promote sleep, such as carbohydrates, bananas, peanuts, figs, dairy and - of course, a certain holiday favorite - turkey. These foods all contain tryptophans, a precursor for creating melatonin. However, avoid having a large meal close to bedtime, because it may result in indigestion, reflux or heartburn. Pop quiz: Two women go walking. One finishes quickly; the other takes her time. They each burn about 400 calories. So who sheds more belly fat? The obvious answer: It's a tie. But a surprising new study shows that the one speed walking actually loses more. Researchers from the University of Virginia found that women who did three shorter, fast-paced walks a week (plus two longer, moderate-paced ones) lost 5 times more belly fat than those who simply strolled at a moderate speed 5 days a week, even though both groups burned exactly the same number of calories (400) per workout. Those speed walking also dropped more than 2 inches from their waistlines, pared about 3 times more fat from their thighs, shed 4 times more total body fat, and lost almost 8 pounds over 16 weeks--all without dieting! The improvements didn't stop there. The high-intensity exercisers lost about 3 times more visceral fat--the dangerous belly fat that wraps around organs such as the liver and kidneys and has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. "Vigorous exercise raises levels of fat-burning hormones," says lead researcher Arthur Weltman, PhD, director of the exercise physiology laboratory at the university. It also increases afterburn (the number of calories your body uses postexercise as it recovers) by about 47% compared with lower-intensity workouts. So how do you make all this science work for you? Start with our 8-week progressive walking plan, which includes both shorter, high-intensity workouts and longer, moderate-paced ones. Add in the Flat Belly sculpting moves to firm your ever-shrinking middle. In just 2 months, you could walk off 1 or 2 sizes--without dieting! Then celebrate your success by walking a full or half-marathon. The 8-Week Plan will prime you for the challenge while flattening your belly.
