But how far have been successful is the question. And if you were successful you would not have been watching this space either. But there is something interesting that has appeared in the journal Appetite. The study conducted on 41 male students by German and Swiss researchers’ state that colour red may persuade diners to evade eating extra because it is usually linked with the thought of danger, stop or veto, the Daily Mail reported. It proved that those who consume or drink from red plates or red cups take 40% less, than their regular counter parts. The students were asked to drink tea from cups marked with red or blue labels. They drank 44 per cent less from cups with red labels. Encouraged by the results they went on to conduct the second stage of the research in which they had given 10 pretzels each on either a red, blue or white plate, to 109 people. Those with a red plate ate fewer pretzels. Based on their findings the researchers recommended the Governments and food industry to use red packaging on unhealthy foods as a deterrent, and could even use red colour in pubs to prevent people from drinking too much. Sounds good na!! Why don’t you give a try and tell us your point of view. Watch out for more interesting facts on health, in these columns. (AarKay)

Health Benefits of Honey January 14, 2012 15:13

How many products in nature are there that can give you as many health benefits as honey does? Certainly there are some, but not that many. Honey is one of these food products that different people have had various opinions on because it is full of glucose and fructose, the so-called simple sugars. Being a sugar, honey has been in the awkward position of being labelled a food product with "dubious health benefits." Sugars, flour and salt are, after all, considered man's worst enemies or so the saying goes. Chemically speaking and under a microscope, honey does not look different from white sugar. The scientists have begun to look at honey with more enthusiasm recently after honey's healing properties have been confirmed with regard to a number of medical conditions. What exactly are they? Honey reinforces your immune system. It attacks bad bacteria and it does it with great efficiency because many micro-organisms cannot grow in an environment with low water activity. Honey helps to produce red blood cells and hemoglobin. It helps to soothe the work of the liver, the stomach and the digestive tract. It is highly recommended for stomach pains and the dysfunction of vital human organs. Honey lowers and balances the blood pressure. It is good for your blood circulation. It helps to lower bad cholesterol. It is good for acne. It is good for skin problems in general: cuts, burns and all kinds of wounds heal faster after you apply some honey on them. Anything else? Yes, honey is good for the nervous system; it is recommended for depression, schizophrenia and in situations that are highly stressful. Taken regularly, honey with milk or warm water prevents you from catching a cold. It does away with a headache and a sore throat, too. What exactly makes it so healthy? It is not so obvious but it is probably a combination of things: honey is produced by bees that collect nectar from many different types of flowers. It has a number of micro-elements and vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12 and C. Honey does possess anti-oxidants such as catalase, vitamin C and chrisin. Honey is classified according to the floral source. Most honey that is produced commercially comes from, at least, two floral sources. Its colour, flavour and density are then greatly affected. Honey is reported to have even greater health benefits when it is diluted in warm water and left overnight. It is recommended that you take it in the morning because its healing properties are then hugely magnified.

Why Become A Vegetarian? January 12, 2012 11:43

You've probably asked yourself that one at one point in your life. As someone who's been a vegetarian for several years, as well as learned from world-class chefs and dietitians, there are several of valid reasons to make a fresh start and begin a plant-based diet. A lot of people concerned about their well-being are searching for ways to get rid of unhealthy eating habits. By taking meat out of your diet, you are getting rid of a major source of saturated fat, cholesterol, and various other harmful elements. This doesn't include the chemicals that you take in by having meat in your diet. The animal processing industry uses various growth hormones, antibiotics, and other unnatural chemicals that you will wind up eating and processing through your body. You can also take into account the environmental aspects. Research has proven that the level of harmful gases given off from the daily excrement of millions of factory-raised livestock is more harmful to the world than every car put together. Additionally, the dizzying amounts of feed necessary to feed the millions of head of livestock requires additional millions of pounds of pesticide and other chemicals, which can run off into drinking water. One more element of the discussion over going vegetarian has to do with the less-than-humane ways animals are processed for eating. We like to think that chickens, pigs, cows, etc. that are raised for consumption lead pleasant lives, similar to how we treat our dogs and cats. But the hard fact is that the majority of livestock are looked at as commodities and are treated as nothing more than a product; not sentient creatures. Realize that most livestock live in small boxes, often not allowed room to stand. They suffer from awful diseases and are kept viable so that they can make it to the slaughterhouse, where they are shocked, hit with electric bolt guns, have their throats slit, and some are even dumped into scalding water while still conscious. The good news is that you can lead a healthy, ethical life by eating a meatless diet. Vegetarians often have lower incidences of disease, and several report feeling a higher level of focus and concentration all through the day. And for the folks who are worried that all they will be eating is lettuce and soybeans, think again. You might be surprised to find out just how great a plant-based diet can taste. With a slate of delicious, simple, and quick cooking techniques, not to mention modern meat analogs and replacements, you will be more satisfied than ever before. This includes the once-in-awhile treats that will make you believe you're eating steak, grilled chicken, pepperoni pizza, and more.
