Lower Back Pain Relief Tips February 09, 2012 20:03

Lower back pain is a common problem for everyone. Around 90% of people have suffered from the problem at least once in their lives. This problem is commonly not a disease, but rather a symptom that occurs from other health problems. Most of the time, the uneasy feeling is generated by no specific reason and just disappears. When the problem attacks, here are some treatments you can try for relieving the symptom. 1. Capsaicin cream Capsaicin is the active ingredient found in chili peppers which creates the hot burning sensation. When applied to the skin, the cream works as an analgesic which reduces the ache. In a study of the connection between lower back pain and capsaicin cream, it is found that 42% of 160 patients who regularly used the cream during 3 weeks improved their lower back cases. The result is better than the other experiment group; among 160 people who were treated with placebo, only 31% showed significant improvement. The cream can be found in drugstores, health food stores, or purchased online. 2. Massage This method is one of the most popular treatments for relieving lower back pain. In fact, research revealed that massage is effective for relieving chronic and subacute pain. Massage is also known to reduce anxiety and depression which often come with the chronic ache. For pregnant women who suffer from the lower back problem, massage is the most often used therapy. 3. Willow Bark White willow tree bark works similar to aspirin to reduce pain. The willow bark contains salicin which turns into salicylic acid when consumed. The same way also applies to aspirin; when the aspirin is consumed, the substance turns into salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is known as the remedy for aches as well as inflammations. 4. Yoga Yoga balances the function of our body with its series of poses. This body exercise also helps improving strength and flexibility. When taken regularly, yoga can relieve chronic back pain. You have to take regular yoga classes at least three months in a row to see the result of the remedy. 5. Breakfast and mental health February 04, 2012 15:32

Parents, please note, just by adding a piece of an apple or a glass of hot milk to your child’s breakfast you could protect them from depression, anxiety and disobedience, a new study has claimed. A team at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth has carried out a study of more than 800 students and found that a complex breakfast is directly linked to better mental health in kids. According to lead researcher Therese O’Sullivan, this may be because mental functioning is actually affected by the absorption of a variety of nutrients. Cereal and milk in particular supply calcium iron and B vitamins that assist neurotransmitters, chemicals needed to transfer information in the nervous systems that are directly responsible for behavior and mood.  For their study, the researchers enlisted over 800 14 year old girls and boys and analyzed their breakfast intake over three days. They found that just one in four teens ate a high quality breakfast containing three or more of the five food groups, cereals, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and meats and alternative like beans, nuts and eggs. Those who ate from more food groups for their morning meals scored higher on a child behavior checklist, with an improvement in mood seen for every extra food type added the study revealed. It didn’t matter what they added, just that they added something different like a banana to their cereal to make that meal more complete with vitamins and minerals. From what we found, that makes a huge difference. “For every additional food group added the mental health status improved markedly across the sample, ”the Age quoted O’Sullivan as saying.

Chicken Stir Fry January 31, 2012 19:10

Stir fry is a great food for a whole variety of reasons, but first of all it is actually really easy to prepare, so even if you are not an amazing cook you will be able to get a great recipe together. Secondly stir frying food is also really quick- because the food is chopped up into small pieces the actually cooking time is very short- in fact preparing the ingredients is normally the longest part of the process. Although a lot of Chinese food isn't renowned for being amazingly healthy, you can make a healthy stir fry very easily - if you use lots of vegetables and lean meats and you stay away from thick, sweet sources then you can make a really healthy stir fry very easily. Here is one of my favourite chicken recipes for you to try out at home. Chicken Stir Fry Ingredients: 2 Plump Chicken Breasts A splash of soy sauce Quarter of a pint of chicken stock A tablespoon of vegetable, palm or olive oil. Half an onion. Half a sweet pepper. First things first, cut all of the ingredients up- the chicken should be cut into chunks approx 1-2 cm in width, and the onion should be diced up finely. The sweet pepper should have the core removed, and be cut into strips. Place your wok on a medium heat, and add the oil- when it is nice and hot cook the chicken for 8-10 minutes until it is golden brown, stirring so you do not let it burn. Make sure it is cooked throughout. Take the chicken out and keep it warm, and add the peppers and onions for a few minutes and then add the stock and enough soy sauce to give it some flavour. Cook for another couple of minutes, until the mixture starts to thicken, add the chicken back in and serve with rice or noodles for a delicious meal.

Black tea may help lower blood pressure: Study January 30, 2012 16:26

Suffering from blood pressure? Then, drink at least three cups of black tea daily which may help you lower your pressure, scientists have claimed. Researchers at the University of Western Australia found that people who drank three cups of black tea a day managed to lower their blood pressure (BP) levels by an average of two to three points. That may not sound like much, but even small reductions in BP levels can have a major impact on the prevalence of high blood pressure (hypertension) and risk of heart disease, the researchers said. “At a population level, the observed differences in BP would be associated with a 10 per cent reduction in the prevalence of hypertension and a seven per cent to 10 per cent reduction in the risk of heart disease and stroke,” study author Jonathan Hodgson was quoted as saying by WebMD. In the study, the researchers looked at the effect of black tea on blood pressure levels among 95 men and women who were regular tea drinkers. Their average systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) was between 115 and 150 at the start of the study. Half of the participants drank three cups of black tea per day for six months, and the other half drank a placebo drink with a similar flavour and caffeine content. Both groups were similar in terms of gender, age, and weight status. By the end of the study, those who drank black tea experienced an average reduction of between two and three points in their 24-hour average systolic blood pressure level and about two points in their diastolic (the lower number in a blood pressure reading) level. This is the first time that long-term use of black tea has been shown to lower blood pressure in people with normal to high-normal blood pressure, said the researchers who detailed their finding in the Archives of Internal Medicine. According to the researchers, there are a number of potential explanations for this health benefit. Recent studies have shown that drinking black tea can improve the function of the endothelial cells, which line the interior of blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction is an early indicator of blood pressure changes. Other research has suggested that the flavonoids found in tea can improve the blood vessel’s tone and reduce body weight and abdominal fat. These findings have important public health implications in light of the high rates of high blood pressure worldwide and the importance of high blood pressure as a risk factor for heart disease and death, the researchers added.

Beer and Cheese for Special Occasions January 23, 2012 19:09

You know cheese goes with wine better than with any other beverage. However, wine isn't as accessible or enjoyable for some people compared to ice cold beer. Do you think pairing cheese with beer will work? Let's find out by exploring the history of beer and cheese together and how you can put this unusual tandem to work for your New Year's Eve party or any other special occasion. Most food connoisseurs love blue cheese because of its texture and varying flavors. This kind of cheese is often paired with wine or champagne. However, beer lovers may also pair this classy cheese with a porter, which is dark-colored and marked by a smoky mix of malt, coffee, and caramel, or a stout that tastes bitter from roasted malt or barley. The pungent scent and taste of a Stilton or Roquefort are pleasurably balanced with the crisp bittersweet notes of strong Belgian ale like Duvel or Chimay Blue. You may also like a pint of Irish stout like Guinness or a Fullers London Porter. If you like the velvety feel of cheddar as it melts in your mouth, then you'll love the way it bursts with strong flavor when mixed with a robust brown ale. Place thin wedges of cheddar on a plate and serve with a glass of India Pale Ale. The beer's flavors of malt and hop contrast sharply with the cheese. You may like a cold tall glass of Worthington's White Shield, Manns Brown Ale, or McEwen's India Pale Ale. However, if you prefer Swiss cheese, like Emmental or Gruyere, then be sure to sit back and relax with a pint of dark lager or bock beer. If possible, be bold and bring your own wedges of Swiss cheese to an Oktoberfest event. From a mild milky taste to a sharp nutty flavor, Swiss cheese pairs up well with the heavy maltiness of German beer. You may like a pint of Harpoon Maibock, Sam Adams Double Bock, or any 'dunkles bier' (German for dark beer). You'll also like beer paired with a nice spread of brie or camembert on plain crackers, slice of ham, or wedge of French bread. The creamy taste and texture of milk rind cheeses blends well with the fruity and earthy flavors of wheat beer, such as Grozet Gooseberry and Wheat Ale. Add a side serving of fresh fruits and berries, and you have the perfect appetizer for any celebration. It's best to serve non-pasteurized cheese to preserve the flavors of raw milk, which makes pairing off cheese and beer a delightful experience. If you plan on placing cheese on crackers, then choose plain or saltine biscuits, or even, something like English wafers or flat bread. Yet, when you serve cheese wedges with fresh berries or fruits, it's best to serve the hard or compressed cheeses at room temperature. Spreadable cheeses may be served in small cups as spreads or sliced fresh from the fridge.
