Following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin during Modi's visit to Moscow, Russia has agreed to release all Indian nationals serving in its military. This decision comes after concerns were raised about the tragic deaths of at least two Indian citizens fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine, with many others claiming they were misled into taking up combat roles. During a private dinner event, Modi addressed the issue directly with Putin, who subsequently committed to facilitating the return of all Indians currently enlisted in the Russian armed forces. Additionally, Putin congratulated Modi on his recent re-election and praised the growing stature of the Indian economy.

Earlier this year, a widely circulated video showed a group of men from Punjab and Haryana, dressed in military uniforms, pleading for help and confirming that they had been deceived into traveling to Ukraine under the false premise of securing high-paying jobs, only to find themselves embroiled in the ongoing conflict. Indian authorities have firmly intervened with their Russian counterparts, demanding the immediate release of the affected individuals. They emphasize that strong measures have been taken against the agents and unscrupulous elements responsible for recruiting these people under false pretenses and misleading promises. Indian investigative agencies have also conducted raids and dismantled a network involved in trafficking Indian citizens to Russia. The findings reveal that these firms had sent at least 35 Indians to Russia, although it remains unclear if all of them were forced to participate in the ongoing conflict.

Prime Minister Modi's arrival in Moscow last evening marks his first visit to the country since the outbreak of the war against Ukraine. He was received at the airport by Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov. Today, the Prime Minister will engage in bilateral discussions with President Putin and also attend the 22nd India-Russia summit in the Russian capital. Throughout this period, PM Modi has been navigating a delicate balance, maintaining India's longstanding relationship with Moscow while also cultivating closer security ties with the Western nations. This visit also represents the Prime Minister's first trip to Russia since his re-election for a third term in office.
