The civil court in Sharjah awarded a compensation of Rs 39 lakh to an Indian expat for his wife’s death which happened due to medical negligence.

The court also ordered Sharjah-based Dr. Sunny Medical Center, run by an Indian origin doctor Darshan Prabhat Rajaram P Narayanara to pay another 200,000 dirhams in legal costs to Joseph Abraham, the husband of the 32-year-old late Blessy Tom.

The amount of compensation must be shared between Abraham and his two children, the court said. The family had sought a compensation of 1 million dirhams.

Hailing from Kerala’s Kollam district, Blessy Tom was working as a staff nurse in the Sharjah University Hospital. In November 2015, she was treated for a breast infection at the private clinic.

At that time the physician prescribed an antibiotic injection without a mandatory test dose to Blessy. Due to this gross medical negligence, Blessy fell unconscious after a reaction to the drug, the report said, citing an official investigation.

Immediately the patient was shifted to Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, but she was pronounced dead within a few hours.

According to the death certificate issued by the hospital, Blessy died of cardiac arrest due to an anaphylactic shock. In order to evade prosecution, doctor Narayanara flew to India immediately after Blessy’s death.

On June 17, the Sharjah Court of First Instance found the doctor guilty in the case and directed him to pay the compensation to the Blessy's family.

"Since the doctor has left the UAE and stays in India, further action is being taken through the Indian Medical Council and Interpol," the report quoted the family lawyer as saying.
